Sparkles, Spice, and Everything Nice!

Once upon a time when leprechauns wandered at the end of rainbows in search of shining pots of gold, fairies sipped tea atop mushrooms in gardens, and mermaids gazed in awe over their collections of thingamabobs below the ocean’s surface, unicorns were found prancing around the world in cafés, ice cream parlors, and even Starbucks! That’s right, the mythical creature that was once so difficult to find is now practically everywhere. Well maybe not actual unicorns, but until skeptics can uncover one from the shadows of magical forests, unicorn inspired food will just have to suffice.

Ever since healthy food blogger Adeline Waugh posted a photograph of her “unicorn toast” on her Instagram page, Vibrant and Pure, back in June of 2016, foodies everywhere haven’t been able to get enough of pastel and rainbow colored drinks, desserts, and dishes! Although it’s unclear of who hopped on the trend shortly afterward, unicorns have made appearances as a Starbucks’ frappuccino, marshmallow charm in Lucky Charms cereal, bagel in New York City coffee shops, and anything else sugary and nice imaginable!

Now before you almost die from absolute Lisa Frank overload, take a breather and be happy to know that Southern California is the hub of trendy foods. Most recently, I visited a dessert shop called Creme and Sugar located in Anaheim Hills, Calif. in order to get my fix of glittery unicorn magic. The confectionary shop has gained attention from notorious publications like Cosmopolitan and The Huffington Post, and is best known for its creation of unicorn hot chocolate.

If you don’t search carefully enough like you would for an actual unicorn, then you just might drive past the small shop tucked away in the corner of a mini shopping plaza. Outside of the shop there are round, white iron picnic tables, and inside it’s just as quaint with sofas and antique wooden tables carefully placed throughout. What’s most noticeable is the blackboard with a giant unicorn and fairy chalked into it. Beside the mythical creatures are the words: THE SECRET IS OUT, emblazoned beneath a humongous rainbow. It’s safe to say that the unicorns most likely come out of hiding in the store after hours, because I still haven’t seen one yet.

On the menu there are several unicorn options to choose from, including unicorn bark, unicorn milkshakes, unicorn cookies, unicorn cake, and of course unicorn hot chocolate. Although Creme and Sugar gained fame from their unicorn hot chocolate, the summer heat had me opting for their unicorn cake instead.

When I made my aesthetically pleasing investment, I was given the option by the cashier to choose which slice I wanted from dozens of others. The one I had so carefully selected came in a clear box, exposing it’s triple layers of pastel blue, pink, and lavender cake with yellow buttercream frosting slathered in between. Decorating the outside was white buttercream frosting, and as extra adornment were hot pink, confetti, and pearl sprinkles. To top it all off was a candy charm bracelet with a heart that said: LOVE U. At just $8 a slice, I was ready to indulge on the triple layered confection!

Despite the mixed reviews of the Instagram worthy treat, I personally enjoyed it for all of its glittery frosting and colorful layers in between. It appealed to both cuteness and flavor, with bites of dense cake all throughout, but for its price point I would recommend going only if you can tolerate sweetness, otherwise you may just end up wasting your money on another overpriced dessert.
